CALEFAX FAR EAST, WILD WEST

Oliver Boekhoorn-oboe, Ivar Berix-clarinet, Raaf Hekkema-saxophone, Jelte Althuis-bass clarinet, Alban Wesly-bassoon with special guests Klaas ten Holt-guitar, Maarten Ornstein-reeds, Tony Overwater-bass, Wim Kegel-percussion

After last year’s successful Ellington program, Calefax returns with another famous jazz epic: The Far East Suite. In half an hour Calefax and the Tony Overwater Trio will impersonate the Far East journey that Duke Ellington and his big band made in the 60’s, passing through classics like Isfahan and Ad lib on Nippon. The rest of the evening revolves around Ellingtons fellow-countryman Frank Zappa. ‘The Wild man of the West coast’, one of the most (hyper)active spirits in 20th century music. Zappa’s influence with his eclectic and experimental style cannot be measured but only illustrated. Calefax does this with new compositions, more or less directly inspired by Zappa; a premiere of Amsterdam American Ned McGowan, the Sherrif’s Collection of Swiss Stefan ‘Infrasteff’ Signer and Americana of Klaas ten Holt for guitar and Calefax.
