Conceived around a core of flamenco protagonists, the Flamenco Big Band was founded in 2011 by Hispano-Dutch saxophonist Bernard van Rossum. In van Rossum’s compositions, Flamenco harmonies and rhythms are redefined through colorful orchestration and the dynamic range of the big band.
Their critically acclaimed debut album Jaleo Holandés was released at the 2015 Flamenco Biennale and closely followed by Luz de Luna, their second album featuring world renowned Paco de Lucia band members Antonio Serrano (harmonica), David de Jacoba (voice) and Dutch saxophone prodigy Ben van Gelder.
‘Van Rossum managed to create not just a sound, but a musical idiom that’s rock solid’ (Jazzenzo).
‘His engaging compositions and arrangements are awash in perception and authenticity’ (All About Jazz).
‘I heard some new territory that night. Modern, innovative, and highly skillful compositions that did not diminish in any way the soul of flamenco’ (Kenny Werner).
