BvR FLAMENCO BIG BAND
Thursday14 May 2015

The Flamenco Big Band is a unique phenomenon, a 21-piece big band that  fuses jazz with flamenco. Winner of the prestigious MeerJazz International Big Band Competition.

Hispano-Dutch saxophonist Bernard van Rossum founded his Flamenco Big Band in 2011. Not just a big band, but a 21-piece jazz ensemble conceived around a core of flamenco protagonists. In Van Rossum’s compositions, flamenco harmonies and rhythms are taken to another level through colorful orchestration and the dynamic range of the big band.

The Flamenco Big Band won the first prize at the prestigious MeerJazz International Big Band Competition and van Rossum himself was granted the award for best soloist. Their critically acclaimed debut album Jaleo Holandés was recently released at the Flamenco Biënnale.

‘I heard some new territory that night. Modern, innovative, and highly skilful composition that did not diminish in any way the soul of flamenco’ (Kenny Werner).

‘Van Rossum managed to create not just a sound, but a musical idiom that’s rock solid’ (Jazzenzo).

The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
