BURTON GREENE DUO & SOLO
Burton Greene piano, Roberto Haliffi drums
American pianist from Amsterdam, avant-jazz pioneer from the 1960s in Chicago and New York, improvising solo and as a duo with Libyan percussionist Roberto Haliffi.
Pianist Burton Greene and drummer/percussionist Roberto Haliffi have been playing together continuously the past 26 years. They have worked in a rich variety of improvised music disciplines: their current repertoire goes from little known great standards to originals to totally spontaneous combustion music. One can hear influences of klezmer and Balkan music (Burton’s ancestry), as well as Middle Eastern music (Haliffi’s background).
Chicago-born Burton Greene made name in the 1960s as an avant-garde jazz pianist. Burton’s recordings on ESP Records in New York include the debut album of legendary free jazz vocalist Patty Waters, with whom he played together recently on the Le Guess Who? Festival in TivoliVredenburg; the band received a standing ovation. After his move to Amsterdam, Burton Greene studied klezmer music, among others. In Amsterdam he met Libyan percussionist Roberto Haliffi.
