Lazzo Matumbi is an icon of Afro-Brazilian music. In the 1990s he was singer and percussionist with Ilê-Aye, the first black group to perform in the carnival of Bahia, founded in 1974. Now they are legends – still among the leading performers at the Bahia. Matumbi translates his love for soul singers like James Brown and Marvin Gaye into a Brazilian swing. He delivers popular songs from Bahia with his deep voice and a good dose of the blues.
