BRAZILIAN SUMMER SESSIONS no.4 2010

From provincial poets to urban rappers, from carnival to favela and from bossa nova to Tropicalismo; Palavra (en)cantada is a trip through the history of Brazilian song. The film documentary precedes a concert by Luiz Melodia. This Brazilian singer is one of the originators of MPB (Música Popular Brasileira), in which samba and bossa nova blended in with Western pop music of the 1960s and 70s. Melodia was ‘discovered’ by a new generation due to the renewed interest in the music of his contemporaries such as Os Mutantes and Caetano Veloso.

Made possible by the Amsterdam Fonds voor de Kunst and VSB Fonds.
