Sunday28 June 2015

Heartwarming combination of the enchanting vocals of Fleurine and the unequalled piano playing of Brad Mehldau. ‘Full of subtle impact and deft timing’ (The Guardian).

Dutch-American singer Fleurine is internationally renowned for her refined timbre, her virtuoso timing and her original lyrics to jazz compositions by among others Monk and Joshua Redman. With pianist Brad Mehldau she shares a love for songs, whether it’s a jazz standard, a pop tune or a Brazilian gem. Their duo album Close Enough contains work by for example Jimi Hendrix and Pat Metheny, alongside original compositions and lyrics in English, French and Portuguese.

At the start of her career Fleurine already celebrated success with her trio featuring Jesse van Ruller and Johan Plomp. Her debut album Meant To Be! became the best-selling album of the 1990s in The Netherlands. A meeting at North Sea Jazz in 1997 led to collaboration with Brad Mehldau, who developed himself as the most influential jazz pianist of his generation.

‘Fleurine’s emphasis is on musicality; in each case, her warm, enveloping sound and gentle, rhythmic drive transform the songs into something well beyond the original sources. And the inclusion of some well-crafted originals, attest to the broad reach of her talents’ (Los Angeles Times).
