BOURNE/KANE/DAVIS & AB BAARS, LAURENT BLONDIAU

Matthew Bourne piano, Dave Kane bass, Steven Davis drums/percussion

Guests: Ab Baars tenor saxophone/clarinet, Laurent Blondiau trumpet

There’s no doubt that Matthew Bourne is a controversial musician. His piano playing can be extremely physical but very lyrical at the same time. That is why he has been compared so often to Cecil Taylor. But Bourne often uses samples, such as looped excerpts from The Simpsons. His trio with Dave Kane and Steven Davis often combines free improvisation with compositions by such artists as Thelonious Monk, Annette Peacock and Carla Bley. Bourne’s style is edgy and intense, with a hint of swing hidden among the folds. This project was initiated by the Antwerp festival Follow the Sound and features Belgian trumpet prodigy Laurent Blondiau and Dutch clarinet and saxophone player Ab Baars.
