BIMLAB 38 CURATED BY GIUSEPPE DORONZO & Frans van der Hoeven
Monday25 March 2019

Four well-known names from various corners of the Dutch jazz and improvised music scene join forces in BIMLAB. For this edition of BIMLAB, appointed curators Giuseppe Doronzo and Frans van der Hoeven have put together a band featuring pianist Harmen Fraanje and drummer Tristan Renfrow.

With his love for unexplored space Giuseppe Doronzo focuses his research on the baritone saxophone, aiming to explore a vocabulary that goes through his background in contemporary classical music , jazz improvisation and his interest for non-western music. In 2012 he moved from Italy to The Netherlands. His recent solo-album Goya received great critical acclaim. ‘An artist who knows how to tell a good story and who adds moments of poetry and emotion to his impressive technique’ (Enola.be).

Frans van der Hoeven is one Holland’s premier bassists. His solo-album centers around the double bass in a fusion of acoustic and electronic music. He was a member of the Jesse van Ruller Trio, among other groups, and he has collaborated with many international greats including Clark Terry, Woody Shaw and Tom Harrell. ‘Unforgettable’ (Jazz.nu).

BIMLAB is an improv series in the BIMHUIS café with unexpected musical encounters. For every edition, two curators are selected from the members of the Union of Dutch Improvisers (BIM), who were once the BIMHUIS founders. The curators will invite musicians for an evening of short, adventurous sessions.
