BIMHUIS 40 JAAR KICK-OFF WEEKEND DAY 4
The Bimhuis anniversary season opens with a long weekend full of performances. Saturday’s concert evening includes the spectacular European avant-jazz orchestra of American pianist/composer Wayne Horvitz.
The Bimhuis, ‘the best and most beautiful jazz club in the whole world’ (Han Bennink), celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. One event not to miss is the kick-off weekend, a long weekend full of performances by rising stars, familiar names and many surprises.
The Amsterdam improv scene has produced groundbreaking music. In Amsterdam Real Book a selection of musicians will play highlights from the Amsterdam repertory, from variety to South African kwela, from virtuoso bebop to punk and from Misha Mengelberg to The Ex.
Just after his international breakthrough as a jazz saxophonist he decided to try opera singing, and it worked: Håkon Kornstad surprises everyone, including himself, with his double talent as an opera tenor and a tenor sax player. The musician from Oslo will now go solo, improvising with sax, opera vocals and electronic loops. This one man tenor battle is a unique taster for the performances of the Norwegian saxophonist with ensemble, later this year at Operadagen Rotterdam festival.
Remarkably, in Oslo itself there will be a simultaneous celebration of 40 years of Bimhuis, with a concert featuring Han Bennink, Kaja Draksler and Jaak Sooäär (Nasjional Jazzscene).
Well-known names from the European jazz avant-garde will join forces under the inspiring leadership of Wayne Horvitz, key figure in the New York downtown scene. The pianist/composer currently resides in Seattle, from where he brings sensation with the electric jazz funk of his band Zony Mash. ‘Horvitz writes melodies that creep into memory and refuse to leave’ (The Wire).
The solo series by pianist Dave Burrell are becoming a tradition at the Bimhuis. This year he will return for a new series of solo concerts in which he will present his unique take on jazz history. Burrell, a pioneer of the 1960s New York avant-garde, was the musical partner of groundbreaking musicians such as Archie Shepp and Pharoah Sanders.
The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.00 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
For this concert you can purchase your ticket online or if still
available, at the box office of the Bimhuis.
