BIMHUIS 40 JAAR KICK-OFF WEEKEND DAY 2

The Bimhuis anniversary season opens with a long weekend full of performances. Thursday’s concert evening includes adventurous jazz from New York by Peter Evans Quintet and guitarist Joe Morris.

The Bimhuis, ‘the best and most beautiful jazz club in the whole world’ (Han Bennink), celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. One event not to miss is the kick-off weekend, a long weekend full of performances by rising stars, familiar names and many surprises.

New York trumpet player Peter Evans is a technical genius with an unbridled urge for innovation. His compositions and improvisations are exciting collages, with which he baffles audience and critics time and again.

The solo series by pianist Dave Burrell are becoming a tradition at the Bimhuis. This year he will return for a new series of solo concerts in which he will present his unique take on jazz history. Burrell, a pioneer of the 1960s New York avant-garde, was the musical partner of Archie Shepp and Pharoah Sanders. This evening he will perform on the Bimhuis stage; on other nights he will perform at the café.

Holland’s most adventurous drummer Han Bennink introduces two Estonian musicians he met during the annual Dutch Impro Academy at the Bimhuis. Singer Laura Remmel once was a candidate for the Eurovision Song festival and Jaak Sooäär is a leading guitarist in the Estonian jazz and improvised music scene.

Joe Morris is a fixture in the New York Downtown scene. He has a unique solo guitar style, bright, unhindered by theatrics and full of unexpected turns. His performance is mandatory for anyone with the slightest interest in guitar music.

Favorite Rhythm is a new Dutch super duo featuring double bassist Ernst Glerum and drummer Joost Patocka. For each gig they’ll invite an illustrious guest for a set with 1920s repertoire. At the Bimhuis café they will perform with sax and clarinet player Ab Baars. Featuring compositions by, among others, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller and Kurt Weill.

The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.00PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).

For this concert you can purchase your ticket online or if still
available, at the box office of the Bimhuis.
