BILL FRISELL TRIO

Jazz and Americana collide in the music of Bill Frisell, who is counted among the top 3 jazz guitarists. ‘Intense ensemble playing around beautiful themes’ (de Volkskrant).

Bill Frisell is counted among the top 3 jazz guitarists, alongside Pat Metheny and John Scofield and he convincingly won the most recent Downbeat Critics Poll. Jazz and Americana collide in his innovative electric guitar playing. Sonorous film music and the interaction between strings and plucked instruments in bluegrass are important influences. The American will perform at the Bimhuis with viola player Eyvind Kang and drummer Rudy Royston. Together they form a tight-knit trio with an intimate and at the same time remarkably rich sound.

The trio will revisit the successful album Beautiful Dreamers from 2010, which was widely reviewed in the international music press. ‘On Beautiful Dreamers, Kang has equal voice, gently moving in and out of lead position, caressing the folksy singsongs into something nuanced and long lasting. [Drummer Rudy Royston] can push and pull in any direction, and he can insinuate swing into the squarest little corner’ (Downbeat).

In over 25 years Brill Frisell has played on more than 200 albums, some 30 of which  have appeared under his own name. He has collaborated with such leading musicians as John Zorn, Elvis Costello and Lucinda Williams. ‘Bill Frisell is perhaps the most valued jazz guitar player of the past decades, thanks to the ever present smile in his melancholy music. He is not in tune with endless solo jazz, but prefers intense ensemble playing around beautiful themes’ (de Volkskrant).
