BERNIE McGANN QUARTET
Bernie McGann-alto saxophone, Warwick Alder-trumpet, Lloyd Swanton-double bass, John Pochée-drums
Bernie McGann has been the figurehead of the Australian jazz for 40 years. Coming from hard bop he started to experiment with free forms, even before he ever heard of Ornette Coleman. His intense, lyrical tone and the subtle friction with tonality remind you of Coleman and the inner logic of his solos conjure up some comparison to Sonny Rollins. Bernie McGann is probably the best and most original alto saxophonist you haven’t heard of.
