Funky fun and ‘dance-ability’ are the two major elements of Benjamin Herman’s New cool Collective big band. However, in a trio or quartet setting, his solos on pieces by Misha Mengelberg and Jaki Byard are sharp as a knife. It is no surprise that he is seen as one of the best alto players of his generation. In this quartet with French pianist Pierre Christophe, he mainly plays music of Byard. The fact that Christophe was his student can be clearly heard in his performing.
