The New York-schooled alto saxophonist Ben van Gelder has already been compared to his tutor Lee Konitz, because of his lyrical playing. He’s also praised everywhere as a composer. Alongside his own New York-based band he plays in The More Socially Relevant Jazz Music Ensemble of guitarist Reinier Baas, ‘jazz with its feet firmly planted in the present, by fanatic young guys with a will of their own’, according to de Volkskrant. In the summer of 2014 they premiered their trio with ICP drummer and living legend Han Bennink for a one-off performance at Concertgebouw. Now they’re back by popular demand.

‘It all sounded Monkian… They played an insanely beautiful version of Body and Soul. During the encore Bennink jumped from behind the drum kit to play one of his characteristic solos on the floor. The three radiated virtuosity and, above all, fun. The audience loved it’ (JazzFlits).
