The ‘boy wonder of Dutch jazz’ (NRC) presents his New York band featuring Ambrose Akinmusire, best trumpet player of the year according to the Downbeat Critics Poll 2014.

Since he was 18 alto saxophonist Ben van Gelder has been traveling between the Netherlands and New York, where he studied with Lee Konitz and Mark Turner. Like his pianist brother Gideon, he formed his own band in New York as well. Ben’s second album as a leader, Reprise, was hailed as ‘most beautiful jazz record of the year’ by de Volkskrant: ‘With his intriguing compositions he takes bebop to a deep place. Each note, each motif, each theme feels like a sure shot, hitting the core.’

What’s so very special is that Ben van Gelder will perform with Ambrose Akinmusire, the number one trumpet player of the year according to many international media, who recently played a sold-out concert at the Bimhuis. His most recent album, The Imagined Savior Is Far Easier To Paint, became second in the same annual poll in the category Best Jazz Album Of The Year. Ambrose’s playing has great emotional impact and with his open-minded vision he strikes a balance between pop and jazz music. ‘He’s the best new trumpeter to emerge since Dave Douglas’ (The Independent).

The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
