Saxophonist and band leader Ben van den Dungen made name in duo with trumpeter Jarmo Hoogendijk. His quartet excels in pure hardbop. With special guest Deborah J. Carter.

Jazz should be danceable and must have blues, is what drummer Art Blakey once proclaimed. It also perfectly describes the music that Ben van den Dungen plays with his current quartet. The saxophone player and composer started his career in the 1980s with the illustrious duo Ben van den Dungen/Jarmo Hoogendijk. Since then he has performed around 4500 concerts in 70 countries, with various groups including Nueva Manteca, Tango Extremo en Cubop City Big Band.

The Ben van den Dungen Quartet has released two albums, Ciao City (2013) en A Night At The Club (2014). The latter was recorded during a series of seven concert at the famous Cafe Central in Madrid. ‘A Night At The Club is of a high level. The mostly original pieces are strong. Pure jazz, fired on by a heavy but supple rhythm section featuring the excellent pianist Miguel Rodriguez. The irresistible weapon is Van den Dungen himself. His playing is technically skilled, yet very passionate’ (Trouw).
