BEIJING SWING

Amsterdam China Festival

Wang Hong-erhu (knee violin), Wang Zhengting-sheng (mouth harp), Qiu Ji–zheng (21-string cither), Cor Fuhler-piano, keyolin, Thomas Lehn-analog synthesizer, Ab Baars-tenor saxophone, clarinet

Improvisation often functions as a musical Esperanto, like it is the case in this top-level meeting between Eastern and Western spirits. The Dutch (Cor Fuhler and Ab Baars, both representatives of the ‘New Dutch Swing’) hardly need to be introduced, the Chinese masters aim for integration of their own culture and that of America and Europe. Wang Hong, player of the knee violin is an expert in the field of ancient Chinese folk music but also performs with jazz musicians like Jon Wang in his residence San Francisco. Wang Zhenting and his giant mouth harp (sheng) collaborated with symphony orchestras and Qui Ju’s cither was often heard in multinational ensembles for contemporary music.
