Saxophonist Bart Wirtz presents his most personal album to date, Beneath the Surface, bringing together jazz, hip-hop, electronica, past, present and future.
‘When the head fights but the heart chooses’ is the theme of Beneath the Surface, the most recent album by Bart Wirtz. The Dutch alto saxophonist moves into a new direction with these songs, each representing a different emotion. Wirtz reflects on the past, gives his vision for the future and grabs the ‘now’ with a blend of hip-hop, rock, jazz and funk.
For over ten years Bart Wirtz has been a member of the Artvark Saxophone Quartet and he plays in, among others, New Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra. His album iDreamer, which was recorded in New York with guest player Nicholas Payton, boosted his career and won him the Edison Jazzism Audience Award in 2012. The track Evolution of the Innocent was included in a popular Spotify playlist and was streamed more than 3 million times. On the follow-up album Interview (2014) Wirtz collaborated with American trumpeter Sean Jones.
‘One of the finest young saxophonists in Europe today, Bart Wirtz adds his own personality to every note he plays.’ (Scott Yanow).
