BARNICLE BILL TRIO & BERT JORIS

Bert Joris trompet, Miguel Martinez altsax, Mark Haanstra bas, John Engels drums

Bert Joris is among the most prominent European trumpet players, with a vision on jazz that is simultaneously nostalgic and forward-thinking. The Antwerp born musician is a guest of Dutch trio Barnicle Bill, featuring the ‘grand old man of Dutch jazz drumming’ (de Volkskrant), John Engels.

The Barnicle Bill Trio was founded by alto saxophonist Miguel Martinez and bassist Mark Haanstra, departing from the round, deep sound of the acoustic bass guitar. Last year the group presented their second CD, No Black Tie, which was recorded in Kuala Lumpur. Since then the group has been working on original material composed collectively by the group members.

‘The music is never exaggerated, it hovers with deceptive lightness, swings unimaginably thanks to the understated groove’ (Trouw).

Contrary to what
