BARNICLE BILL TRIO PRESENTS JOHN ENGELS 75TH ANNIVERSARY

John Engels, the ‘grand old man of Dutch jazz drumming’ (de Volkskrant) keeps on looking forward. Right before the festive session to celebrate his 75th birthday he will present his brand new trio. Barnicle Bill, featuring alto player Miguel Martinez and bass player Mark Haanstra, operates in the same vein as the famous saxophone trios of leaders like Sonny Rollins and Lee Konitz. The repertoire contains jazz songs that never really became standards. Some of the countless artists with which John Engels has played include Chet Baker, Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis and all Dutch jazz artists of name. ‘A master of nuance’ (NRC)
