Turkish vocalist/saz-player/percussionist Behsat Uvez, clarinettist/saxophonist Steven Kamperman and accordionist Bart Lelivelt hail from different musical traditions, but they all blend perfectly in the Barana Trio. Uvez has been living in the Netherlands since 1989 and ever since then he has proved to be a versatile improviser and virtuoso instrumentalist in countless groundbreaking projects. Kamperman’s roots are in jazz, but for quite some time now non-western music has been an important source of inspiration. Lelivelt is a specialist in new music for the accordion, but also highly sought after in folk music circles. Uvez and Kamperman also play in the six man Carlama Orkestar, that makes use of practically the entire saxophone family from soprano to bass sax, accompanied by drums and percussion. Infectious, danceable Balkan-brass, with plenty of space for improvisation – they characterise their own sound as a cross between Fanfare Ciocarlia and the World Saxophone Quartet. ‘The four saxophones provided a wholly different sound colour than the usual trumpets, but the group still held its own with the best Serbian brass bands.’ (De Volkskrant).
