With an exceptional 18-piece line-up, Turkish-Dutch world jazz ensemble Baraná honors co-founder Behsat Üvez, who died last year. “One majestic whirlwind’ (de Volkskrant).

In the last ten years the Turkish-Dutch ensemble Baraná has established an international reputation with its exciting cross-over of jazz, improvisation and elements from Turkish music. Last year Behsat Üvez passed away, the multi-instrumentalist who founded the group together with reeds player Steven Kamperman. Now a special 18-piece line-up will honor musical all-rounder Üvez, with a concert of diverse music, in which Turkish melodies and surprising solos meet big band arrangements. Featuring vocalists Mehmet Uludağ and Sanem Kalfa, cello player Ernst Reijseger, Iranian percussionist Afra Mussawissade and many others.

Singer, saz player and percussionist Behsat Üvez was born in Ankara and played with the Turkish State Ensemble until 1984. In the late 1980s he moved to Groningen, where he taught music. With Baraná he toured the world, from Mexico to Siberia, garnering enthusiastic reviews. In 2011 he received a knighthood for his bridging of western and non-western music. Early 2013 he died of cancer, at the age of 53.

‘One of the most interesting world music ensembles in The Netherlands… one majestic whirlwind’ (de Volkskrant).
