BARANÁ & CLASTRIER & RIZZO

Valentin Clastrier-hurdy-gurdy, Carlo Rizzo-multi-timbre tambourine, Behsat Üvez-vocals, saz, percussion, Bart Lelivelt-accordion, Steven Kamperman-alto clarinet, soprano sax, ranket

The Turkish-Dutch trio Baraná crosses boundaries with cross-pollinations of Turkish music and divergent genres from all over the world. Two rare traditional instruments perform a central role in the project Modes et maqams. Frenchman Valentin Castrier transposes the medieval hurdy-gurdy to the present time. Percussionist Carlo Rizzo revamps the Italian tambourine by adding all kinds of handles and levers to the instrument. ‘This is gripping music, capable of making you intensely happy’ (Trouw).
