BALCONIES | BIOLUMINUS | THE PERSONS
Thursday31 August 2023

This year’s Doek Festival underlines the importance of preserving fringe spaces and supporting a new generation of local artists in their artistic development. The festival will connect to the outskirts of the cities of Berlin, Brussels and Amsterdam. Improvising musicians will be involved in various performance spaces such as De Ruimte, Zaal 100, Sexyland, and also our venue, with no less than two concert nights on our stage. On the first night various groups will appear, alternated with duo performances featuring illustrious guests such as Nate Wooley and Teun Verbruggen.

BALCONIES

Balconies is a captivating, impulsive triptych of the sublime and grotesque, malleably formed into an elusive timeline of trippy, pulsating elegance. The trio was formed in Berlin five years ago. Performances in front of public have been rare and thus far only occurred in the city of Berlin. The three musicians have been steadily building an extensive library of recordings, made in Steve’s rehearsal studio. At some point in the near future, they will shoot out these recordings into the world.

BIOLUMINUS

Bioluminus is a combustion machine of musical ideas and interaction. This could be called energy music, but deep listening music would also be an apt description. With her voluminous tone and great control over extended techniques, tenor saxophonist Ada Rave will interact with the rhythmic intensity of bassist Aaron Lumley and drummer Onno Govaert.

THE PERSONS

The Persons was formed in 1979 in New York City as a workshop for the compositional ideas of guitarist Dan Licht and saxophonist Michael Moore. The idea was to work with Indonesian compositional ideas in a rock setting and experiment with thickly voiced guitars. The present, Amsterdam-based incarnation of Moore and Vatcher expand the sonic and rhythmic possibilities even further. All Music Guide has even described their approach as ‘World Surf Music’.
