It is a politically turbulent and very divided religion, ranging from Turkey through the Caucasus and the Middle East to India. In addition to many local differences, the music in these contours also shows great similarities: in construction, ornamentation, linearity and modality.
In the occupation there are two star players from Azerbaijan: Elcin Nagijev is virtuoso tar-player and Elshan Mansurov is renowned for his enchanting, expressive kamancha game (both Iranian string instruments). The Gevorg Dabaghian from Armenia resembles his duduk (hobo, a double-trick instrument) deep melancholy; and the Turkish Neva Özgen seduces the listener with her elegant violin chemistry.
