ARTURO O’FARRILL AND THE AFRO LATIN JAZZ QUINTET

Arturo O’Farrill piano, Ivan Renta rieten, Jim Seeley trompet, Carlo de Rosa bas, Vince Cherico drums

Energetic and innovative ‘Afro Latin Jazz’ by the Cuban pianist, composer and Grammy winner Arturo O’Farrill, the true heir to the legacy of his father, band leader Chico O’Farrill.

The New York-based Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra plays Latin American repertory while serving as a platform for radical crossovers, in recent years with adventurous guest musicians such as Vijay Iyer, DJ Logic and Edmar Castaneda. The Afro Latin Jazz Quintet is just as forward-thinking as its bigger brother.

Pianist and band leader Arturo O’Farrill honors tradition, but with an attitude firmly implanted in the here and now. His life story crisscrosses the world of music: he was classically trained, was touched by Herbie Hancock’s piano playing and developed himself in Carla Bley’s free-thinking orchestra. Only later in life he embraced the heritage of his Cuban father Chico and became his successor as the leader of the Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra.

‘Arturo O’Farrill, like his father, Chico, pushes the boundaries of a genre often consigned to the traditional label and embeds it in the realities of contemporary life’ (Downbeat).
