Angelo Verploegen: A Handful of Stories & Little Dancer
Angelo Verploegen trumpet/flugelhorn, Nils van Haften tenor sax, Marc van Roon piano, Guus Bakker double bass, Jasper van Hulten drums
Angelo Verploegen trumpet/flugelhorn, Jeroen van Vliet piano
Two personal events inspire trumpeter/flugelhornist Angelo Verploegen to make two new albums, which he will present on our stage: A Handful of Stories, performed live in a quintet line-up, and Little Dancer in a duo with pianist Jeroen van Vliet.
A Handful of Stories will encompass an eventful life in the multifaceted Dutch jazz scene. Having reached the age of 60, Angelo felt the need to look back on 25 years of composing for various formations such as The Houdini’s, the trio Verploegen, Verhoeff & Van der Westen, and Executive Lounge. For this live performance, Verploegen will reunite the rhythm section of his acclaimed The Ballad Album (2011), with pianist Marc van Roon, bassist Guus Bakker and drummer Jasper van Hulten, now joined by saxophonist Nils van Haften.
The birth of Angelo’s grandson is the direct reason for recording Little Dancer. Out of a feeling of intense happiness, coupled with the necessary worries about the future of a new generation, songs appeared about love, hope and comfort, about life and about being a child. This selection requires an intimate approach and Angelo has found that in the renewed collaboration with pianist Jeroen van Vliet. They performed as a duo before, during the closing weekend of our first location at Oudeschans, and they have worked intensively together in Verploegen’s quartet Executive Lounge. Both albums will be released on the audiophile label Just Listen Records.
