Paul van Kemenade sax, Ray Anderson trombone, Ernst Glerum bas, Han Bennink drums
This international supergroup radiates fun. The American trombone player and fivefold Downbeat critics poll winner Ray Anderson is obviously at ease with his Dutch soulmates. Alto saxophonist Paul van Kemenade, double bassist Ernst Glerum and drummer Han Bennink have each won the Boy Edgar Prize, the most prestigious Dutch jazz award. They´re able to switch effortlessly from bright swing to spicy Cuban grooves and steamy ballads. The repertory contains Van Kemenade’s composition Close Enough, a track from hsi eponymous CD which earned five stars inj Downbeat.
‘A great band led by fine Dutch alto saxophonist Paul van Kemenade and witty Dutchman Han Bennink on drums… well, a single snare, to be precise, played colorfully with brushes, sticks and the occasional shoe’ (JazzTimes).
´Whatever line-up he plays in, Van Kemenade’s sound always has a strong, recognizable character. Not many jazz musicians with such a strong character can make such a wide range of music’ (de Volkskrant).
‘The great Dutch drummer Han Bennink smiling ecstatically, and sustaining a more emphatically propulsive pulse with the brushes than most drummers manage with sticks. The leader’s bop-rooted alto lines and Anderson’s remarkable repertoire of hard-blown accents, rich long sounds, swarming-bee noises and slithery elisions developing it over Glerum’s booming bass-walk’ (The Guardian).
