This annually recurring world music festival is a cooperative effort between musicians and artists from a continually different European port city. Last year, Lisbon was featured, in 2009 Barcelona is the port. The modern capital of Catalonia is home to a diversified music scene. Immigrants from South America, Africa and Europe enrich the city with plenty of music from their own countries often combining it with Spanish temperament and sentiments. Mestizo music mixes Spanish music with such exotic influences as salsa, rumba, reggae but also hiphop, dance and pop. The mestizo line- up for the large concert hall of Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ includes the swinging bands Costo Rico, Nour, El Tio Carlos and Che Sudaka. In the Bimhuis African influences are featured: Moroccan vocalist Abdeljalil Kodssi mixes gnawa, jazz & flamenco. Blick Bassy is the new voice of Soul from Cameroon and the young Malinese singer-songwriter Fatoumata Diawara performs ‘new Wassoulou folk’. From 17:00 hrs (5 P.M.) onwards the Entrance Hall serves as the stage for the Mixed Media Lounge with acoustic performances by and interviews with Amsterdam World artists in an intimate setting. The evening concludes with the Que Pasa Dance Party (01.00-03.00 hrs) in the Bimhuis with DJ Eduardo and DJ Jairzinho.
