The Amsterdam Marimba Weekend is all about the melodic percussion instrument marimba, one of the oldest and newest instruments: from the West-African balafon to the classical modern instrument of nowadays. A highlight of the four-day festival is the evening concert at the BIMHUIS, featuring Simon Moullier, Tatiana Koleva’s Youth Percussion Pool and the Kanazoé Orkestra.
Simon Moullier is in a league of his own when it comes to the vibraphone, an exceptional jazz virtuoso who has earned praise from celebrities such as Herbie Hancock and Quincy Jones. Tonight the Frenchman will perform with some of Dutch jazz’s greatest, saxophonist Ben van Gelder and drummer Martijn Vink. Tatiana Koleva is internationally renowned for her new music performances. She will perform with the festival’s house band, the Youth Percussion Pool. The spectacular closing act is the Kanazoé Orkestra led by Seydou Diabaté. This super talent from Burkina Faso plays traditional balafon in a fusion with contemporary jazz.
