Ambrose Akinmusire’s Owl Song ft. Bill Frisell and Gregory Hutchinson
Saturday3 February 2024

Due to circumstances Herlin Riley can’t perform this concert. He will be replaced by drummer Gregory Hutchinson.

As a teenager, Ambrose Akinmusire used to pick up his trumpet and play along with his Bill Frisell records. These days, the trumpet player plays concerts with the guitar hero, who’s more than thirty years older. As a duo they have taken on many different styles, from blues and bop to futuristic experiments with electronic effects. Now they formed a new trio called Owl Song, for this concert completed by drummer Gregory Hutchinson

Ambrose Akinmusire is fascinated by wonderful melodies on the one hand, and heavy beats on the other: he played on the hip-hop classic To Pimp a Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar, but he also composed for string quartet. He released five albums on the famous jazz label Blue Note, and was praised by legendary colleagues such as Randy Brecker and Archie Shepp.

Bill Frisell is counted among the top guitarists. All kinds of American styles collide in his electric guitar playing, from jazz and bluegrass to rock and film music. He made his breakthrough collaborating with Pat Metheny, John Zorn and Elvis Costello. He currently releases albums on Blue Note, solo as well as in ensembles with, among others, Lucinda Williams and Charles Lloyd.
