Special edition of the eponymous concert series at Zaal 100, in which leading musicians bring new life to famous and lesser known music of Duke Ellington. This concert is part of the 5-day International Duke Ellington Conference 2014 in Amsterdam.
As part of The International Duke Ellington Conference 2014 this special edition of the All Ellington concert series will feature three jazz string players: Oene van Geel, Jeffrey Bruinsma en Mascha van Nieuwkerk. They will continue the tradition of string players in the music of Duke Ellington; his band featured a regular violinist, Ray Nance, but he also collaborated with Svend Asmussen and Stéphane Grappelli.
Jeffrey (violin), Oene (viola) and Mascha van Nieuwkerk(cello) form a close-knit trio. They will approach Ellington’s music with respect, but they will also express their unique personalities, continuing on the basic idea of All Ellington. Most of the repertory was arranged especially for this concert by Oene van Geel, Eric Boeren and Joost Buis.
All Ellington is a concert series at Zaal 100 and the Bimhuis, dedicated to reinvigorating the famous and lesser known music of Duke Ellington. In the spirit of Ellington’s orchestra, very different musicians will gather on stage, each with their own vocabularies and unique styles of playing and improvising.
The concert is organised in cooperation with the 22th Ellington Study Group Conference, 14-18 May 2014, see www.ellington-2014.nl.
The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
