ALEXANDER VON SCHLIPPENBACH TRIO
Afterwards at the café: DJ Wolter Wierbos
Alexander von Schlippenbach piano, Evan Parker tenor/sopraansax, Paul Lovens drums
This monumental trio stood at the foundation of European improvised music at the end of the 1960s, with its spontaneous, relentless interplay. Every year saxophone player Evan Parker, pianist Alexander Von Schlippenbach and drummer Paul Lovens set out on their Winterreise, which makes a stop at the Bimhuis in 2013.
Each improvisation is a completely new journey of discovery for the trio, yet recognizable elements remain. Evan Parker amazes with his endless note patterns created through circular breathing. The piano playing of Alexander Von Schlippenbach brings influences of Thelonious Monk’s jazz together with principles of Arnold Schoenberg’s twelve tone music. And unlike most drummers Paul Lovens does not repeat himself for one moment.
‘Everything jazz is supposed to be about: acrobatic poise, precise articulation at the speed of sound and staggering technique married to pure instinct’ (The Wire).
