Ad Colen – A Bird’s Eye View

Ad Colen tenorsax, Rogier Hornman cello, Mike Roelofs piano, Dion Nijland contrabass, Yonga Sun drums

Ad Colen is renowned for his ‘beautiful tone on tenor sax: an old-fashioned bell sound but agile, in the Rollins tradition but with personal content’ (de Volkskrant). Following five internationally acclaimed albums the Utrecht-based saxophonist now presents A Bird’s Eye View, on which his quartet has been expanded with cello player Rogier Hornman.

The compositions on A Brid’s Eye View have each been inspired by a different bird sound. The five musicians offer each other room in the dynamic improvisations. Alongside tenor, Colen also plays soprano sax, and pianist Mike Roelofs adds extra color with Fender Rhodes and Wurlitzer.

‘The Netherlands has reason to be proud of such groups. They strive as “keepers of the flame” to make sure that the jazz tradition is kept alive throughout the globe’ (Jazz Review).
