Charismatic singer and oud player Abdel Gadir Salim is celebrated in Sudan for his ‘Khartoum Blues’, a mixture of folk, blues, jazz, reggae and afrobeat. He’s an authority on Sudanese folk music, which he translates into accessible popular songs. Because of the use of Western instruments his music is often compared with jazz. Amongst many others, Salim has collaborated with rapper and war child Emmanuel Jal. ‘Salim’s singing has a clipped dryness to it as he plays his vocals against his wriggling oud lines’ (Pitchfork).
