Special concert in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of the iconic Dutch jazz musician Boy Edgar.

To celebrate the centenary of the birth of Boy Edgar the Dutch Jazz Archive (NJA) and the Bimhuis organise a special concert, dedicated to the musical heritage of this iconic Dutch jazz musician. This day David Kweksilber Big Band, Konrad Koselleck Big Band Loevendie, Gerrie van der Klei will perform pieces from the rich musical legacy of Boy Edgar.

In the 60s and 70s Boy Edgar was of great influence on the Dutch jazz as a composer and bandleader. One of his major inspirations was Duke Ellington, to whose example he took the people in the band as a starting point and created a lot of space in his arrangements for solos and improvisation. He worked with leading musicians from Holland and abroad, including Nina Simone, Ben Webster, Abbey Lincoln, Betty Carter and Eric Dolphy.

Besides bandleader and composer Boy Edgar was also a gifted pianist and trumpeter. In December 1964 received the Wessel Ilcken Boy Edgar Prize, the Grand Prize of the Dutch Jazz which was renamed in honor of Boy Edgar in 1980 to the Boy Edgar Prize, and most recently to the Buma Boy Edgar Prize.
