Building

We are one of the most modern concert halls in Europe. Right from the design phase of the building in 2005, sustainability has been important for us through the use of solar panels, an in-house heating system and strict waste separation, among other things.

To illustrate, nearly 1,000 solar panels have been installed on our roof, recovering 15% of used energy. With a score of 1.02 on the Energy Index, the government awarded our building the energy label A in 2019.

We also have our own source for heating and cooling the building. This storage is a sustainable energy supply in which hot and cold air is stored via a heat exchanger in a water-carrying sand package, ninety meters deep in the ground. As a result of this use, there is no gas connection in the building and therefore very little nitrogen emissions.

Although waste is inevitable, we try to avoid it as much as possible. Among other things, we separate paper and cardboard, glass, organic waste, deep-frying fat, pmd (plastic, metals and drink cartons), bulky waste and iron.

BREEAM-NL Certificate

BREEAM-NL has been the certification method for a sustainably built environment since 2009. This method allows projects to be assessed for integral sustainability based on four criteria: Sustainable, Cost Saving, Healthy and Future-proof.

In 2019, the certification process was successfully completed and our building was certified in the Asset section with the score “very good”. This makes the Muziekgebouw/BIMHUIS one of the most sustainable cultural institutions in Amsterdam.
