Flemish jazz is booming thanks to the success of bands such as STUFF. and Dans Dans in which jazz-educated musicians experiment with dance, dub, hip-hop and film music. A new wave is already coming up, of which three exemplary bands will perform at the BIMHUIS: SCHNTZL, De Beren Gieren en BRZZVLL.
SCHNTZL is a duo comprised of pianist Hendrik Lasure and drummer Casper Van De Velde. The two musicians first met at the ages of 12 and 14, respectively, and have never stopped playing together since. Minimal music, electronica and singer-songwriters such as Bon Iver and Nick Drake are influences popping up in their catchy compositions.
Packed with vitality, humor and melancholia, De Beren Gieren’s album Dug Out Skyscrapers (2017) looks ahead to the future of European jazz. Impressionist melodies, energetic drums and unexpected turns are important characteristics of the Flemish trio featuring Dutch pianist Fulco Ottervanger.
Antwerp-based BRZZVLL, a seven-piece formation including no less than two drummers, represents colorful psychedelic jazz funk with a nod towards Sun Ra. ‘BRZZVLL sounds irresistibly metropolitan’ (HUMO).
