Omer Avital Qantar

Aanstekelijke mix van jazz en oosterse muziek door Israëlische contrabassist uit New York. ‘One of the most exciting musicians to come onto the jazz scene in the last 20 years’ (Downbeat).

Qantar is de nieuwe naam voor het kwintet rond componist en contrabassist Omer Avital. Hij leidt zijn bands met zo’n aanstekelijke enthousiasme dat hij door Downbeat al vergeleken werd met zijn legendarische collega Charles Mingus.

Omer Avital verwijst in zijn muziek naar zijn half Joodse en half Arabische afkomst. Het resultaat is een grootstedelijke mengelmoes van culturele invloeden, van oosterse melodieën tot bedwelmende Noord-Afrikaanse woestijnblues.

Omer Avital maakt deel uit van een hechte groep Israëlische jazzmusici die naam maken in de clubs van New York, onder wie trompettist Avishai Cohen en pianist Aaron Goldberg. Een week voor dit optreden verschijnt het eerste album onder de naam Qantar op Zamzama, Omer’s nieuwe label.
