De Amerikaanse pianist/componist Thelonious Monk (1917-1982) heeft een revolutionair oeuvre nagelaten. Naar aanleiding van zijn 100ste geboortedag presenteert het BIMHUIS niet zomaar een hommage: pianist en pionier van de Europese avant-garde Alexander von Schlippenbach en de Berlijnse band Die Enttäuschung verdiepen zich al jarenlang in het volledige oeuvre van Monk en spelen ook nu een selectie die allesbehalve voor de hand ligt.
Het album Monk’s Casino uit 2004, een tour de force met live-opnames van alle Monk-composities, wordt alom geroemd. De driedubbel-cd kreeg de hoogst mogelijke waardering in de jazzbijbel Penguin Guide to Jazz. ‘A modern masterpiece… a project that asks deep questions about the nature of jazz composition… essential listening’ (Penguin Guide to Jazz).
