De uit Chicago afkomstige saxofonist/fluitist/componist Henry Threadgill geldt als een van de grootmeesters en vernieuwers van de hedendaagse jazz, al wil hij zelf niet in één vakje gestopt worden: ‘I do music, period. Jazz, European orchestral music. American religious music, white and black. Parades. All types of functional music, period.’ Threadgill is na 13 jaar eindelijk terug in het Bimhuis. Eerder speelde hij hier met zijn legendarische formaties Air, Sextett en Very Very Circus. Zooid is zijn huidige groep, met o.a. het enorme gitaartalent Liberty Ellmann. ‘Threadgill’s is music with drama, humor and a sinister side, and he’s one of the most important composers working today in jazz.’ (Downbeat). ‘It would be difficult to overestimate Treadgill’s role in perpetually altering the meaning of jazz.
