Gunter Hampel, vibrafonist, fluitist, basklarinettist, componist en bandleider wordt beschouwd als één van de belangrijkste Europese vernieuwers van de jazz in de jaren zestig en behoort tot de wereldtop van vibrafonisten. ‘Gunter Hampel is a major instigator of Germany’s free-jazz-movement, whose collaborators have included his wife Jeanne Lee, Don Cherry, Cecil Taylor, Willem Breuker, Archie Shepp, Anthony Braxton, and many others.
