CARMEN SOUZA DUO

Carmen Souza werd geboren in Lissabon en leerde zingen in het kerkkoor. Zij heeft een sterke band behouden met haar Kaapverdische roots. Op de cd Verdade zingt zij zowel in het Portugees al in het Creools, de taal van haar ouders. De sensuele stem van Souza zit vol Saudade, het gevoel van weemoed en verlangen. De akoestische muziek, een mix van blues, jazz en bossa, werd gecomponeerd door de gerenommeerde Portugese bassist Theo Pas’cal. ‘Een soepele en wendbare stem die moeiteloos door alle registers snijdt’ (de Volkskrant).

Special guest bij dit concert is ud-speler Mehmet Polat.
“Born in Urfa and raised in an environment of Alevi Sufism and Anatolian folk music. After studying Turkish and Arabic classical music, first in Urfa and later in Istanbul, he developed a new approach to playing the Ud. In 2007 Mehmet moved to the Netherlands for Master studies in Indian music at the Rotterdam Conservatory. Mehmet worked as a composer and soloist with prestigious musicians and orchestras as: Nederlands Blazers Ensemble, Metropole Orchestra, The Black Pencil Project, played world première performances of Theo Loevendie and Maarten Altena from Amsterdam. Performed as a soloist in several prestigious concert-halls in the Netherlands and abroad like Concertgebouw, Muziekgebouw and Bimhuis in Amsterdam, and toured to many countries in Europe, Middle east, Latin America. Mehmet Polat is founder member of the quartet Arifa.”
