Pianist Aruán Ortiz is aan een flinke opmars bezig vanuit de jazz- en improvisatiescene van Brooklyn, New York. Als solopianist kwam hij vorig jaar al ijzersterk uit de hoek met het album Cub(an)ism op het Zwitserse kwaliteitslabel Intakt.

De van oorsprong Cubaanse musicus verweeft verschillende vormen in zijn composities, met als resultaat een unieke nieuwe stijl. Hieruit blijkt zijn fascinatie voor zowel modern klassieke muziek als Afro-Cubaanse tradities, en voor grote jazzvernieuwers als Ornette Coleman en Thelonious Monk.
