The Quartet Nl: Bennink/Moseholm/Beets/Herman
Four flying Dutchmen of jazz celebrate the music of Misha Mengelberg.
Misha Mengelberg (1935-2017) became a legend during his lifetime for his imaginative compositions crossing jazz and swing with European music, avant-garde and a healthy dose of absurdism. Percussionist Han Bennink and alto saxophonist Benamin Herman are intimately familiar with his work. Bennink has been since the 1960s, when he co-founded the revolutionary Instant Composers Pool with Mengelberg. And Herman because he has performed and recorded Mengelberg’s work since the age of twenty. With the virtuoso piano playing of Peter Beets the repertory becomes a point of departure for a new, completely original group sound. With their different views on Misha’s compositions, the four musicians together will move into a completely new direction.
‘The quartet’s playing is always playful and adventurous, whether they follow the melody or go against it. It’s delicious to hear how they take on this wonderful, amusingly provocative and exciting repertory’ (de Volkskrant).
‘Descriptions and comparison could go on ad infinitum. But overall not only does Quartet NL confirm the skill of each player in many evolutionary Jazz styles, but it also opens up a whole new repertoire for Swing bands that want to mix challenges with fun’ (Jazzword).
