Alistair Payne ft. Tong Eisen-Martin
Scottish trumpeter is making waves in Amsterdam.
REFLEX
Jazz finds roots in activism. In challenging or bypassing conventions. A conversation with the status quo. In its most free form – improvisation – jazz is constantly searching for new forms of interaction. This quest and the conversations that are found are central to REFLEX. In the series we invite musicians to make new work that reflects on the world and its society. The composer of this new concert in the series is trumpeter Alistair Payne.
Alistair Payne is a prominent name amongst the new wave of Dutch Jazz. The Scottish-born musician is known for his distinct trumpet tone, out-of-the box creativity and diversity of projects. He has featured as a side man with numerous acts including the Sun-Mi Hong Quintet, Motet, Perselí, Tijn Wybenga’s AM.OK, Guy Salamon Group, and Tineke Postma Quartet. He won the Dutch Jazz competition with the Sun-Mi Hong Quintet, and the Keep an Eye The Records competition with Molino and the Guy Salomon Group respectively. This specific repertoire is written in collaboration with critically acclaimed poet and movement worker; Tongo Eisen-Martin. Alistair has used Tongo’s text, distinct spoken rhythm, and performance energy as starting points to compose. Alistair’s writing. Drawing insipiration from morphing tonality echoing Arvö Part, pulses and grooves that you’d expect in the universe of Madlib, and stretched atonality and silence. For this concert Uldis Vitols has created a special light installation.
REFLEX is a production of BIMHUIS Productions is made possible with help of Ammodo.
