Lockdown & Listen

Every week, programmer Frank van Berkel tips an album in his Lockdown & Listen. This week: Taste of Culture by Montis Goudsmit Directie.

Wild improvasstions on the fly

Last Saturday the BIMHUIS was reopened to the public with the deeply melancholic music of Reijseger Fraanje Sylla. The atmosphere was as usual: intense and magical. Afterwards, as usual, there was the possibilty for a drink. The one and a half meter provides an even more exclusive concert experience in the BIMHUIS and afterwards there is still plenty of room for fun in the Bimhuis café and in the new Bimhuis-Atrium café at the entrance.

This promises a lot for next Saturday, because then we are going to rock with the soul jazz of Montis Goudsmit Directie. Prepare yourself by listening to their latest album. Taste of Culture. A diverse album with hard and soft, swinging and melodic, sensitive and less sensitive songs. Dimongo groovet as their anthem and there is also a contribution from Jan Akkerman (Jan) and two evergreens, one from Stevie Wonder (Living for the City) and Al Green (Let’s Stay Together).

But there is also room for adventure and experiment. In their bio, the group themselves describe their music as “wild improvasstions on the fly”. Titles like Skit Joppa Dengé and Skit Mozzarella 1 & 2 indicate that direction. If the men go live on the Bimhuis stage next Saturday, it will certainly happen with those inventive improvisations. That’s for sure.
