Nathan Daems is a multi-instrumentalist and plays flute and Turkish clarinet alongside saxes. His love goes out to both Gypsy music from the Balkan region and Turkey, to jumpy Ska or Indian classical music, ethio jazz and full-blooded jazz. Not surprisingly, Daems can also be found in various bands such as Bazaar d’Orient, Mafiasko Taxi and in the Antwerp Gipsy Ska Orkestra.
In 2010 he won the Young Jazz Talent contest with his Nathan Daems Quintet during the Gent Jazz Festival. In 2011, their debut album “Talking Dialect” (W.E.R.F.097) came out. This was tipped by the Knack among the top 10 jazz publications of the year. Yet Nathan decided to put his quintet in the closet and go for two projects in which he delves deeper into the fusion between jazz and ethnic music.
Together with partners in crime Lander Gyselinck and the Italian bassist Marco Bardoscia, he founded the Ragini Trio in 2012. The trio searches for the roots of Indian music and arranges traditional ragas according to their headstrong jazz idiom. On Wednesday 6 March the Ragini Trio will perform at the Bimhuis, together with Sawani Mudgal and Bojan Z.
Nathan Daems tips:
SAT 2 MARCH – AN INTERPLANETARY NIGHT
Fumaça Preta: Delicious dirt and super groovy. Super inspiring band! Do I smell voodoo?
SAT 9 MARCH – JANE BUNNETT & MAQUEQUE
Seems like a big party!
THU 21 MARCH – LINUS+ØKLAND / VAN HEERTUM / ZACH
Linus / Okland + Van Heertum + zach: I do not know the project but I do know the individual musicians. Each and every one of the most inspired improvisers who walk around in Flanders. If you hear these names you should never doubt and just go. Then you are glad that you have not stayed in the seat at home 🙂
WED 27 MARCH – JOEY BARON / BRAM DE LOOZE / ROBIN VERHEYEN
3 class bins, this is no different than popping.
