ZEELAND SUITE REVISITED
Friday1 May 2015

Homage in music and images to the Zeeland province and its impressive landscape, led by Boy Edgar Prize winner Jeroen van Vliet. Update of the remarkable Zeeland Suite from 1977.

In 1977 the recordings took place of the Zeeland Suite, an audiovisual project that until recently was unparalleled in Dutch jazz and television history. Pianist Leo Cuypers composed the suite which parts were recorded live on different locations in Zeeland, by a 7-piece band featuring Willem Breuker and members of his Kollektief. The live music and the epic images, which were sometimes filmed from a helicopter, formed the basis of a nearly 50 minutes long television broadcast.

Zeeland Suite Revisited is an update of the remarkable project. The contemporary version was composed by pianist Jeroen van Vliet, this year’s Boy Edgar Prize winner. A new film was shot for the television show Vrije Geluiden, this time with the help of drones and with a new group of musicians. This new band, featuring big names from contemporary Dutch jazz, will now perform at the Bimhuis. Van Vliet composed new music, but with the same goal as Cuypers: to pay homage to the impressive landscape of Zeeland.

The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
